FREE ON EVERY PLAN · PAID WHERE IT EARNS IT

SSL Certificates

Most sites do not need to buy a certificate. Every Hostna hosting plan issues and renews a free Let's Encrypt certificate automatically, and for a normal website that is the same encryption a paid one gives. The paid certificates exist for the two things a free one cannot do: prove who the organisation is, and cover every subdomain at once.

WHEN THE FREE ONE IS ENOUGH

Which is most of the time

A Let's Encrypt certificate gives a browser exactly the same padlock and the same TLS as a certificate that costs money. It is domain-validated: it proves the connection reaches the domain it claims to. For a shop, a blog, a company site or an API, that is the whole job.

  • Same encryption, same padlock, no browser warning
  • Issued when the plan is set up and renewed without asking
  • Covers the domain and its www
WHEN IT IS NOT

Identity, and subdomains by the dozen

Organisation- and Extended-Validation certificates are checked against company records before they are issued, so the certificate says who you are and not just where you are. A wildcard covers every subdomain of one domain with a single certificate, which is the practical reason most people buy one.

  • OV and EV verify the organisation against public records
  • A wildcard covers *.yourdomain in one certificate
  • Issued on any host, not only ours

Validation is done by the certificate authority, not by us, and it takes time: DV is usually minutes, OV normally one to three working days, and EV can take longer and requires company documentation. We cannot shorten those checks, and a certificate is not refundable once the authority has issued it.
